Reunion Island Travel Guide – What To Do, When To Go & How To Get Around
Reunion Island is a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, 9,700km from mainland France. Volcanic, mountainous and tropical, it offers an unparalleled diversity of landscapes.
When to visit Reunion Island?
The best season is the austral winter (June–October): mild temperatures (22–26°C), calm sea, clear skies and less rain. This is also whale watching season (July–October) and the period with the most comfortable hiking conditions.
The austral summer (November–May) is hotter and more humid, with a risk of cyclones in January–February. However, you’ll find the best rates and the island is less crowded outside school holidays.
Getting around Reunion Island
A rental car is essential — there is no efficient public transport to reach the natural sites. Several car rental agencies are available at Roland Garros airport (Saint-Denis) and Pierrefonds airport (Saint-Pierre). Book your rental car at the same time as your accommodation, especially in high season.
From the Iloha in Saint-Leu, all the major sites are accessible in under 2 hours.
